General changes his instance hearing hard words from USA

EDITORIAL: Mai and Musharraf, Govt and Pakistan

General Pervez Musharraf says that Mukhtar Mai is free to go abroad and that he has “full faith in her and in her patriotism”. He believes she won’t ‘bad mouth Pakistan’, a fear that he expressed only some days ago while touring New Zealand. It is good to know that the government’s paranoia has abated. It shows that General Musharraf is not a rigid person and that when the need arises he is quick to shift position. But is this a change of heart or mind?

Some questions and answers are required. If General Musharraf was right to stop Mai from proceeding abroad ten days ago, how is he right again in letting her go abroad now?
