Like father like SON.
Talking of sycophants
This is with reference to Humayun Gauhar's article published in The Nation on April 15, 2007. Mr Humayun Gauhar is the son of late Altaf Gauhar who was an advisor and media incharge of the former dictator Field Martial Ayub Khan.
He has proved himself to be a true son of Altaf Gauhar and in his anti-Bhutto fit, has spewed a lot of venom against the most popular political party of Pakistan. Like father like son, he is advising General Musharraf to perpetuate his rule.
As far as the subject of this article is concerned, Mr Gauhar may not be aware of the fact that 3,500 cases (including one about burning of the Pakistani flag, numerous ones about various murders and one of Major Kaleem's torture recorded on video), all done under the patronage of Ishrat ul Ebad, have been withdrawn by the government of Sindh. The MQM leadership and workers have been freed of all these charges in the last 8 years under the instructions of General Musharraf.
May I ask, were these cases withdrawn as a result of some referendum in which people of Pakistan overwhelmingly support the idea or was it done due to some political compulsions of the regime? It appears that either the writer is unaware of such a development (withdrawal of cases) or is being intellectually dishonest by not mentioning the same.
Mr Gauhar has aggressively criticized the so-called corruption cases of Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif. But he fails to see the mega corruption scandals of the present regime that include the failed sale of steel mill, sugar scandal, privatization of the PTCL, numerous land scams and the stock market scandal.
Talking of 'sycophants, courtiers and artful dodgers', it is a pity that Mr Gauhar's twisted advice to the General has placed him in the same category that he condemns. -FARZANA RAJA, MPA & Secretary Information, PPP, via e-mail, April 17. (Nation. April 19th 2007)
