When Ghazala Kazi told me about her conversation with Arif Muslim and his remark, my spontaneous remark was a loud laugh.
I disapprove of his remarks, but I disapprove more of the way these remarks have been spread.
Arif Muslim is not the only one with a less than complimentary attitude towards Punjabi. Many think like that.
NOBODY raised any hell when Gopi narrated during APPNA mushaira this summer in DC ( as he narrates all the times) the conversation between Josh Malihabadi and Pandit Hari Chand Akhter; when Josh repeated used to say that Punjabi is the language of Jahannum. In fact, every body was laughing and took it in light mode.
What Arif Muslim said was not much different than that.
The fact that many great Urdu poets were ethnic Punjabis does support the same notion. Iqbal, Faiz and many living legends of Urdu poetry may have an apologetic attitude about Punjabi. Other wise they would have written more in Punjabi.
Arif Muslim is a person of strong opinions and that is the reason he is not a very likable person. I have complained against him to Ethics and Grievance in 2002 when he did not allow me and others to raise funds for the detainees effected in the post 9/11 dragnet.
I have always found myself on the opposite side of the issues in APPNA. He is one of the APPNA purists and believes it should not be tainted with new ideas. It should remain true to its core issues. Many like me thought otherwise and wish APPNA should be open to new ideas and provide a platform to address all for the issues faced by Pakistani Americans.
But I would not call him a bigot or lynch him.
He may not let APPNA grow up, but he has nurtured APPNA beyond any of us had. I doubt any one will surpass him in his services to APPNA.
His services are not limited to APPNA only. He has served the community he lives in for a long time.
What is strange is the fact that he is son of ethnic Punjabi. He belongs to the Pujabi Sudagraan family.
I feel sad about those who come to APPNA, to gather gossip, perhaps do not even register for the meeting, and once they find anything juicy enough, relay to the world.
